청나라 말, 정무문의 창시자이자 애국 무술가인 곽원갑의 청년 시절을 그린 작품. 서구의 침입으로 어지러운 시기, 무술가 집안 출신인 곽원갑은 지병 때문에 글공부를 선택했지만, 부친의 친구에게 몰래 무공을 사사하였다. 강호로 물러난 아버지는 원한을 품은 자들의 표적이 되고, 가족들은 큰 고초를 겪는다. 곽원갑은 숨겨둔 실력을 발휘해 아버지의 적을 물리치고 가족과 마을을 지킨다. 하지만 원한은 또 다른 원한을 낳고, 음모에 빠질 위험에 처한 곽원갑은 고향을 떠나 천진으로 향한다. 그곳에 도착하자마자 무협인들 사이에서 이름을 날리게 된 곽원갑. 일본인 등 외국인 도전자들에게 잇달아 승리를 거두면서 천진 내 중국인들의 자존심을 세운다. 자신뿐 아니라 제자와 소중한 이들을 보호하고 정의를 추구하기 위해 끊임없이 고군분투한다.
In the early 1900s, China was occupied by several foreign sovereigns, and the country was in Chaos. Hou Yuanjia, a descendent of the Wushu master family, chose to be a scholar but secretly was taught wushu by his father's friend. Even though his father decided to retire from the Jiangho, his rivals and enemies didn't stop attacking him and the family. Yuanjia stepped up to defeat the enemies and keep the family and the village safe. However, the revenge never ended, and Yuanjia had to leave his hometown, escaping a plot against him. In Tianjin, Yuanjia defeated not only thugs but also several foreign warriors. His winning streak made the Chinese proud but made him a target to foreigners. Yuanjia had no choice to fight back as hard as he could to protect the ones he loved.
